"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."

These words, even when sung on the playground, are untrue.  Words do hurt.  Words, unlike sticks and stones, will continue hurting the victim long past the original bullying situation.

Verbal bullying consists of:

  • Taunting
  • Name calling
  • Gossiping
  • Belittling
  • Criticizing
  • An overall angry voice that intimidates

If you or someone you know are experiencing verbal bullying, the best way to handle the bully is to tell school authorities or a trusted adult.  Do not ignore the bully as this does not tend to work for this type of abuse.  Speaking up to adults and not isolating yourself, is the best recourse.
